The UK Didn’t Close All The Doors: 3 Visa Routes Tech & Salesforce Professionals Should Know in 2026

โš ๏ธ Disclaimer: This article is for general awareness and educational purposes only. It does not constitute legal or immigration advice. Always refer to official UK government guidance at gov.uk and consult a qualified immigration solicitor before making any immigration decisions.

When professionals in Salesforce, Technology, Data, Consulting, and Digital Transformation think about working in the UK, the Skilled Worker Visa is almost always the first โ€” and often the only โ€” route that comes to mind.

But it is not the only one.

The UK immigration system includes several other routes specifically designed to attract global talent, support international business expansion, and offer flexibility to professionals with particular backgrounds or achievements.

In this article, we’ll look at three routes that are genuinely worth knowing about in 2026:

  1. Global Business Mobility (GBM)
  2. Global Talent Visa
  3. British National (Overseas) โ€” BN(O) Route

Understanding these routes won’t replace professional legal advice โ€” but knowledge creates options. And sometimes the best opportunity is the one you didn’t know existed.

The Global Business Mobility route was introduced in April 2022, replacing the old Intra-Company Transfer (ICT) visa system. It brings together five distinct pathways for overseas businesses that need to temporarily deploy staff to the UK.

The Five GBM Routes

RouteWho It’s For
Senior or Specialist WorkerEmployees transferring to a UK branch/entity
Graduate TraineeRecent graduates on specialist training programmes
UK Expansion WorkerStaff establishing a new UK presence
Service SupplierWorkers fulfilling contracts under trade agreements
Secondment WorkerEmployees on secondment to a UK business

For most Salesforce, Technology, and Consulting professionals, the Senior or Specialist Worker route is most relevant โ€” designed for employees who are transferring to work at their employer’s UK branch, subsidiary, or affiliated entity.

Key Requirements to Be Aware Of

  • Your employer must hold a valid UK Sponsor Licence for the GBM route
  • As of April 2024, the minimum salary threshold for Senior or Specialist Workers sits between ยฃ45,800 and ยฃ48,500, or the prevailing rate for the occupation โ€” whichever is higher
  • The GBM visa is not a direct pathway to settlement โ€” it’s a temporary route, though extensions are possible
  • There is a financial maintenance requirement of ยฃ1,270 to support yourself

Why This Matters for Tech & Salesforce Professionals

If you already work for a multinational organisation โ€” a global SI, a large consultancy, a technology firm, or a Salesforce ISV โ€” and your company has a UK presence, this route may already be available to you internally.

Many professionals focus entirely on finding external sponsorship when they may have an unexplored internal mobility option through their current employer.

Roles that commonly fall within this route include:

  • Salesforce Consultants and Solution Architects
  • Project Managers and Programme Leads
  • Business Analysts
  • Data Specialists and Engineers
  • Senior Technology Professionals

Official Government Page: Global Talent Visa โ€” GOV.UK

The Global Talent Visa is, in many ways, one of the most powerful โ€” and underutilised โ€” routes available for experienced professionals in technology and digital transformation.

Unlike most UK work routes, it requires no employer sponsorship and no minimum salary threshold. What it requires instead is evidence of recognised impact, leadership, and contribution in your field.

Who Is It For?

The Global Talent Visa is open to individuals who can demonstrate exceptional talent or exceptional promise in one of the following fields:

  • Digital Technology
  • Academia and Research
  • Science and Engineering
  • Arts and Culture

For the Digital Technology pathway โ€” the most relevant for the Salesforce and tech community โ€” applicants must be endorsed by Tech Nation, which was reappointed as the official endorsing body by the Home Office in April 2025 on a three-year contract.

Important 2025 Update: Simplified Application Process

From 4 August 2025, the application process for the digital technology pathway was streamlined. Applicants now only need to complete the single GOV.UK Stage 1 form โ€” the separate Tech Nation application form has been permanently withdrawn. This removes one of the most common causes of previous application errors.

Exceptional Talent vs Exceptional Promise

There are two categories within this route:

  • Exceptional Talent โ€” for established leaders who have already demonstrated significant achievements and wide recognition in their field
  • Exceptional Promise โ€” for emerging leaders who can demonstrate the potential to become leaders, even if full recognition hasn’t yet been achieved

What counts as evidence?

For the digital technology pathway, evidence typically includes:

  • Technical applicants: Demonstrated expertise in building and working with technical infrastructure, technology stacks, or engineering systems
  • Business applicants: Commercial, investment, or product development expertise in digital products or leading digital product businesses

Beyond the formal categories, a track record of community contribution, speaking at industry events, publishing thought leadership, mentoring others, or leading significant transformation programmes may all strengthen an application.

This is a route where your reputation becomes your application.

Official Government Page: British National (Overseas) visa โ€” GOV.UK

The BN(O) route is a distinct pathway created specifically for eligible Hong Kong residents who hold British National (Overseas) status, and for certain eligible family members.

Background

British National (Overseas) status was established under the British Nationality (Hong Kong) Act 1985 and granted to Hong Kong residents who registered before the territory’s handover to China on 1 July 1997. The BN(O) visa route itself was introduced in January 2021, in response to the changing political landscape in Hong Kong.

What the Route Offers

For eligible applicants, the BN(O) route provides the right to:

  • Live in the UK
  • Work in the UK (no separate work visa needed)
  • Study in the UK
  • Build a pathway to settlement โ€” applicants can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after five continuous years on the route
  • Apply for British citizenship โ€” 12 months after ILR, subject to meeting remaining eligibility requirements

The route also extends to certain dependent family members and, following a February 2026 expansion, to adult children of BN(O) status holders who were under 18 on 1 July 1997.

2026 Update

The UK government has publicly stated that the BN(O) route remains a protected and humanitarian pathway. No confirmed changes have been made to the five-year settlement route as of 2026.

Why It Matters for the Tech Community

For Hong Kong-connected professionals with BN(O) status, this route offers genuine flexibility. You are not required to have a job offer before applying, and once in the UK, there is strong demand for Salesforce, technology, data, and consulting talent across UK employers.
